The Skill Meal by The Skill Mill
The Skill Meal is a cookery eBook celebrating deliciously healthy eating on a budget, featuring tried-and-tested recipes by young people.
The eBook is created by The Skill Mill – a multi-award-winning social enterprise.
The Skill Mill employs young people who have been repeatedly involved in the justice system, giving them real jobs with real wages. This helps them see themselves in a different light and build something positive. Over the past decade, The Skill Mill has been incredibly successful in helping young people break the cycle of reoffending and has received numerous prestigious awards.
The Skill Mill works with young people in small cohorts, often outdoors, doing physically demanding environmental work. Supervisors noticed that many young people would come to work without having eaten breakfast – and sometimes skipped lunch too. While we cannot tackle every aspect of food poverty that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds may experience, we decided to invest in building the lifelong skill of healthy eating.
That prompted The Skill Meal project, based on the belief that young people should start their day with a nutritious breakfast shared with their mates. After a year of the project, the young people identified their favourite breakfast recipes, and with the help of a nutritionist, we created an eBook with simple, budget-friendly meals they love.
The eBook is free to download, in exchange for your email address, so you receive the news from The Skill Mill.
